The capital of La Spezia province in the Liguria region of northern Italy, the city of La Spezia lies at the head of the Gulf of Spezia, some 50 miles (80 kilometers) southeast of Genoa. It is a port, an industrial center, and a major Italian naval base. The city of La Spezia is located in the gulf of the same name, also called Il Golfo dei Poeti (The Gulf of Poets) because the town was a popular inspirational location for famous poets such as Byron, Dante and Shelley. Nowadays it is one of the classiest and cleanest ports in Italy and many tourists love to walk under the shades of its palm-lined streets and parks filled with exotic citrus trees.
